Part of our History Part of our History  Almshouses have existed for over 1000 years enabling individuals in need to retain their independence and to live in their local community. The National Association supports the trustee bodies with encouragement, advice, guidance and information facilitating the sound administration of their charities thus enabling older people to live in comfort and security.

Assisting the Trustees of Almshouse Charities   The Association offers assistance, advice, guidance and encouragement to the numerous trustee bodies to enable them to provide suitable accommodation for, in the main, older people.

Influencing
The Association represents these charities with the Charity Commission, the Homes and Communities Agency, the Tenant Services Authority, the Land Registry and other Government departments.

A growing demand
The National Association of Almshouses, through its member charities, is a major provider of older persons' accommodation in the UK. Some charities provide homes for younger people in need. The demand increases every year. There are currently some 35,000 people who are residing in almshouse dwellings

Finance
Every year the Association has to raise over £300,000 to continue its work. None of the amount needed is received from Government grants.
